"Buddy" Matches

rygun Cowboys Buddy Matches are 4 stage matches held on the second Saturday of the month, typically four times a year (see schedule below). While we can mentor new shooters through any of our monthly matches, we generally recommend that they come to a Buddy Match for their introduction to Cowboy Action Shooting because these matches have fewer stages (4 rather than 6) and are slightly less formal than our regular monthly matches.

Because Tri-County Gun Club is located in an urban environment that is closely surrounded by residential and  commercial activities, we have to be intensely mindful of firearm muzzle control and we absolutely insist that everyone who participates in our program comply with correct firearm procedures. Our goal is to help you learn what is unique to our sport and to have fun with us in safe manner. If is often helpful to use up most of your first match jitters at our shorter and less formal Buddy Match. Afterwards, you should be prepared for safe participation in our regular monthly matches and know what to expect.

A mandatory shooters meeting begins at 9:00 am.  (Please plan to arrive early to complete match registration and new shooter forms.)  The match meeting serves to inform all participants on the TCGC Action Range rules, basic firearm handling, and safety procedures unique to Cowboy Action Shooting.  New participants will then be paired up with experienced Orygun Cowboys who will act as their mentors in the match.

During the match, new participants will be shown safe handling procedures for the loading and unloading of the firearms, master gun grips, types of firearms, ammo used, etc. We shoot four different stage scenarios and end time is usually about 2:30 pm.

The cost of the Buddy Match for new match participants is $8.00. Cash or a personal check is acceptable and payable to TCGC - CASA.  Donations for ammo provided by the Orygun Cowboys are appreciated.

Junior shooters (ages 10-17) are most welcome. However, all junior shooters must be under the direct and constant supervision of an accompanying adult.

Wear comfortable clothing and bring food and drink according to your needs with a mind on the weather. If you have a cowboy hat, bring it. If you don’t have cowboy clothing and gear don’t worry about it as it is not required for a Buddy Match.

We strongly suggest that you experience Cowboy Action Shooting before fully investing in cowboy gear. Mentors will share their own equipment (firearms, holsters, belts, etc.) with new cowboy shooters for use during this event. It is best to first learn the safe handling of the firearms and correct procedures before making any purchases. Then, after talking to experienced shooters and spending adequate time evaluating your needs, you can be more confident that the dollars you spend will be spent wisely.

Thank you for your interest in shooting with the Orygun Cowboys. If you have not already done so, please make arrangements for your own personal introduction to the fun and challenge of Cowboy Action Shooting by contacting a program representative today.
